B235R motor revisie

Hi all,

apologies for writing in English - still learning Dutch. If you'd like to reply, please do so in Dutch though - I can read it!

My name is Alex and together with my black right-hand drive 2001 9-3 Viggen convertible, I moved to Amsterdam a while ago.
I just enjoy the Viggen far too much and couldn't leave her in the UK
She is now approaching the 200.000 km mark, still running well - despite a full bolt-on stage 3/4 Abbott treatment!
Because I want to keep her for another 200.000 at least, I am thinking about a pre-emptive engine revision. Possibly in conjunction with a tiny bit of tuning in the shape of forged pistons !

Since I'm not too familiar with Dutch engine specialists, could anyone point me towards a good (value) company? I heard Sweedspeed might be an option? Or maybe something closer to Amsterdam?

I'd be helpful for any advice and am looking forward to being a part of this community!

Another upgrade I'm planning on doing is the change to 300mm ventilated 9-5 Aero rear-brakes by the way! Just ordered some custom brake lines from Genuine Saab in the US to connect the bigger calipers!

you don t really need the new brake lines.
De huidige passen ook maar nieuwe zijn sowieso goed om een keer te doen.

De zuigers (gesmede dus lichter sterker en duurder) kun je krijgen bij saabpartners meppel en anders via
wossner en verdi (nog lichter enz.)

zuigerveren en lagerschalen hebben ze daar ook allemaal op voorraad, while you'r at it.... .

De 235 staat er om bekend dat ie ietwat gevoeliger is voor een kantelend zuigertje: komt bijna niet voor maar toch. Nu is een goede tijd om de motor
levend te houden. imho. maar daar kun je ook anders over denken: 'joh, dat ding gaat nog 2ton mee'.

200.000 km..... Da's echt niks voor zo'n blok. Als hij goed loopt, hij geen olie verbruikt en de compressie op alle 4 de cilinders goed is zou ik de kosten niet gaan maken. Goed onderhouden en er netjes mee rijden, dan kan hij met alle gemak nog 2 ton mee!
Al eens laten controleren op black sludge? Neem aan dat er een Mitsubishi TD04 op zit?

Viggen is indeed with the TD04...

200k km's or miles?

I would never start such an operation without problems with the engine. If it is running OK, not using too much oil and sounding OK, why bother? Just save the money for the moment you need it, might be within 10k, or maybe even after 100 or 200k.

But do they have the expertise and are equipped to work on engines and do the revision themselves or do they just sell the parts?

Usually I'd also say to never touch a running system - but I'm actually quite tempted in the uprated internals and the >300hp world that lies beyond
It would also give me a certain piece of mind to put the pedal to the metal in this 15 year old car!
The last time I had it checked for sludge was 2 years ago and there was nothing. I'm only running Mobil 1 5W50 and change oil once a year (drive less than 10k km). Also deleted the oil strainer to prevent starvation in the case of clogging!

I'm still running the TD04 15T which seems to be quite reliable! Going beyond 300hp would of course require something in the league of GT28RS, 18T etc...

18T will do the trick.
maar je mapsensor, fuelpump en injectors moet je dan wel aanpassen. idem voor de ecu.
340 pk is zo maar binnen je bereik.

Rein, with an 18T and 340bhp you wil surely damage the engine/pistons. You will need forged pistons.

If you do take forged pistons, then I would advise to go a step larger like a 20T and aim for 350/360hp and 550nm (non-biopower), a whole lot of fun in a Viggen.

Bij t7 mocht je toch tot 340pk gaan?
I wouldn t go there and stop at 300. Recently I saw 2 busted motors, Who were tuned by trained mecanics.
So it s better to follow alexj s advise.

Meningen verschillen, Sommige zeggen 300, anderen 320. 340 nog nooit gehoord op stock internals.
Maar alles hangt van tune (o.a. temperatuur) af.
Met biopower kan je wellicht iets hoger...

I drove a while with around 335 hp on stock t7 b205 internals...

It has to run perfect with as low as needed boost to not damage the pistons.. because they are thin...

Safer option is the forged pistons.

I'd most definitely upgrade the pistons while I'm at it. Would be a pity to open up the engine and not make use of the opportunity. That's what my original post was about after all
340hp would be my current maximum though. In conjunction with an oil cooler to keep oil temps below 95°, that would make for a stable performance which doesn't result in instant gearbox overload.
More power without a differential is a bit of a waste anyway. Except on the Autobahn haha.
If I was to get tired of the performance in the future, I could always dial up the boost and for example install an even bigger intercooler - but the main internals are already there at least.
Directly installing a 20T might be an option. I guess I could run it cooler but then again sacrifice spool time?

No, unfortunately I neither have the skills nor the time to do those things myself ... after all we're talking about a full revision including honing, porting, weighing...
