2010 Saab 9-4X takes to the snowy roads of Detroit [Spied again]

General Motors’ Saab division may be in a bit of a holding position due to the Detroit automaker’s financial position, but the Swedish brand hasn’t put a complete stop of future product planning. Next in the pipeline for Saab is an all-new compact CUV — dubbed the 9-4X — which our spy photographers caught up with on the snowy roads of Detroit.

Codenamed GMT168, the Saab 9-4X will arrive in time for the 2010 model year. The crossover shares a platform with the upcoming Cadillac SRX and will enter production at the Ramos Arizpe plant in the latter half of 2009.

The 9-4X is essentially Saab’s first true crossover SUV. It will effectively accomplish what the cancelled 9-6X was intended to do — compete with the Volvo XC60 and other European mid-size crossovers.

The vehicle will replace the Swedish automaker’s 9-7X, which has been on the market since 2005. The 9-7X rides on the GMT 360 truck chassis, which also underpins the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. All the GMT 360 vehicles will be discontinued by 2009.

Unlike the 9-7X, this model will be sold globally.

Saab boss Jan Ake Jonsson said the 9-4X will get GM’s new diesel engine co-developed with VM Motori, which puts out 250 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Jonsson also said that both models will be made in Mexico and will be exported to the U.S. and Europe. Engine choices will include a range of gasoline powerplants as well as the aforementioned diesel.

The 9-4X is also slated to be equipped with Saab’s XWD all-wheel drive system.

No word on when we might see the production version of the 9-4X, but the upcoming Detroit and Chicago auto shows haven’t been completely ruled out.

But that claim was probably mostly directed against the politicians, because these fresh spy photos from northern Sweden on 9-4X shows that the tests are still ongoing. And for the first time we can finally see how the interior looks out in serial order!

At last, a picture of the interior of the Saab 9-4X! Not so "American" as many feared, or what do you think?

Someone ignition key between the seats, we can not see but this Saab-typical attributes are probably gone because the car is the "key unparalleled." Unless one of your readers can find a better explanation, it looks in all cases to sit out a start button to the right of the steering wheel.
The big screen, halfway up on the console, looking not quite series out. Where we guess that there will be a full-screen navigation and other communication. Otherwise, it is quite strict, "Swedish" and not as "American" as many feared.

Ik vind de saab 9-4x een echte saab. hij is ontwikkelt door saab i.s.m. GM. Mensen die dit geen saab vinden of vinden dat de saabs van tegenwoordig niet meer zo saabachtig zijn, staan stil in de tijd. Saab maakte natuurlijk in het verleden ook al mooie auto's maar tegenwoordig is het misschien iets minder apart maar als je wilt overleven dan moeten ze wel. En trouwens in rij in een 9-3 ss en nog nooit zo'n lekkere auto gehad. ben al 28 jaar met het merk gebonden.

oja en de opmerking van iemand hierboven: Ik weet niet of er wel saabrijders op zo'n 9-4x zitten te wachten. slaat helemaal de plank mis. Tuurlijk als saabliefhebber zit je daarop te wachten, maar misschien is het ook meer bedoelt om juist mensen te trekken die geen saab rijden.

Als je er over nadenkt was een 99 in vele opzichten bij introductie ook geen "Saab" behalve dan dat het solide en eigenwijs was.

Dat gemekker dat een Saab geen Saab is, is van alle tijden (althans, sinds de 9000, wat ik bewust mee kreeg). heb ook niet zoveel met zulke redeneringen. Uiteindelijk komt men wel over de brug : ja, toch wel Saab, toch wel mooie auto, etc etc.

de 9-4X mag wat mij betreft zo komen. Er moet verkocht worden. en dat gaat met deze 9-4X wel gebeuren.

Vanbuiten ziet hij er op het eerste zicht wel goed uit.
