I imported a SAAB 900 from the USA years ago. I thought it might be irritating with many rules and hassles, but everything was very tolerant, even the fact I drove it to Muenchen, Belgium, Luxembourg, before going to the RDW for new plates. I was questioned a couple of times, however, but no hassle about it, since I did arrange proper Dutch insurance.
I also didnot have to pay any taxes, because I imported it as part of household goods. Customs consisted of some laidback uniforms coming by when the car arrived to affirm the VIN.
Furthermore, did I go to the RDW for inspection and hence install new headlights for the APK, to conform to European standards. Absolutely no problems at all, actually.
Gasoline prices have always been painful. Also road taxes and the way this is spent is an absurdity, and not something which exactly promotes a positive image of the Netherlands. Hence, most must be questioning why someone from Sweden would willingly want to move here.
My advice would be to maintain your registration in Sweden, but this is ofcourse against the rules.
