Eergisteren plaatste de website cars.com een update over de ontwikkelingen rond het Takata airbag 'schandaal' in de US.

Natuurlijk is Nederland geen US maar toch

GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson said the Jan. 22 expansion "is expected to include approximately 110,000 Saab 9-3 and 9-5 vehicles" for driver-side airbag inflators in cars sold here from 2003 to 2011. (GM owned Saab until 2010.)

In het artikel staat dat GM in de US een tool beschikbaar gesteld heeft waarbij je op basis van je VIN kan zien of je auto betrokken is bij deze 'terugroep actie'

- information as given by mr Wilkinson is prematurely.
- no official statement is made on types/models of Saab involved (except for the 9-2X) nor on the quantities involved.
- We are still investigation this issue.
- We expect that an official statement will be released shortly
- if official statement is released it will be for the North American markets only.
- no idea if Saab has used same type / batches of Airbags for both North America & Europe.
- GM tool is for north american Saabs only.

NHTSA has released the full list of vehicles (by model year, make and model) affected by the Takata air bag recalls. Consumers can also use NHTSA's VIN look-up tool to see if their Vehicle Identification Number matches one of the approximately 19 million vehicles from 12 auto manufacturers involved in the recall.

Ik heb geen idee Roeland.
Maar dat is helemaal niet relevant.

Dat GM besluit om in ieder geval in Canada en de Verenigde Staten naast de aldaar verkochte 2005 Saab 9-2x's ook de
my 2003 -2011 Saab 9-3's en de
my 2010-2011 Saab 9-5's
terug te roepen vanwege een ondeugdelijke klapzak zegt me meer dan genoeg.
Ze zullen die pakweg 110.000 9-3's & 9-5's alleen terugroepen wanneer dat strikt noodzakelijk is en niet uit liefdadigheid..

Voorzover mij bekend zijn er geen airbag-incidenten met Saabs 9-3 of 9-5 geweest. Ik ben gewoon erg benieuwd of ik iets gemist heb.

Ik denk dat hetgeen Levensnevel daarmee wil zeggen is, dat hoe klein de kans dat zo'n zak spontaan klapt ook is, er dus altijd een kans is dat het gebeurt. De aantallen zijn daarbij dan wellicht minder interessant. Als dat is wat hij bedoelt dan ben ik het daar mee eens.

@elboero: helemaal mee eens. Wat ik probeer te doen is dit onderwerp in het juiste risico-perspectief plaatsen.

Daar bedoel ik het volgende mee:
Ik schat de kans dat je bijvoorbeeld onderweg een klapband krijgt en de gevolgen daarvan aanzienlijk hoger in.
Ook maak ik me bijvoorbeeld meer zorgen om de kans op ontploffing van een LPG-tank waaraan ondeskundig gewerkt is.

Kortom: ik ben op zoek naar het juiste risico-perspectief waarin ik dit airbag-verhaal moet zien.

op de snelweg: achteropkomend vrachtverkeer / SUV's
wanneer je als laatste auto in een (vrijwel) stilstaande file aangesloten bent.

@levensnevel: we zien dus allebei het meeste risico in rijden als laatste auto in een (vrijwel) stilstaande file.
Er is één verschil: ik ben het meest bevreesd voor bestelbusjes.
Ik zie onderweg veel bestelbusjes die veel te weinig afstand houden en vaak ook nog met een appende bestuurder.

Mijn 9-3 is oorspronkelijk in de US nieuw geleverd aan de eerste Nederlandse eigenaar en een jaar later als verhuisboedel geëxporteerd naar Nederland.

Recall Description:

This part 573 notice is in furtherance of the Takata Holdings Inc. (“Takata”) equipment recall described in NHTSA recall number 16E-005 dated January 25, 2016. This Takata equipment recall relates to all Takata PSDI-5 driver airbag inflators produced from the start of production through the end of model year 2014. Takata PSDI-5 inflators were installed in the following GM vehicles as original equipment: (i) 2003 – 2011 model year Saab 9-3 vehicles; (ii) 2010 – 2011 model year Saab 9-5 vehicles; and (iii) 2008 – 2009 model year Saturn Astra vehicles. In accordance with Takata’s defect determination, GM is recalling these vehicles to replace the Takata driver airbag inflators.

Safety Risk Description:

Takata’s part 573 report for equipment recall 16E-005 states, in part: “Takata has determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety may arise in some of the subject inflators. Takata is aware of four test ruptures in ballistic tests of non-desiccated PSDI-5 inflators. Takata is not aware of any field incidents in which a PSDI-5 inflator has ruptured, either desiccated or non-desiccated. Takata is taking this action in an abundance of caution, to address all of the subject non-desiccated PSDI-5 air bag inflators, due to the similarities of design and manufacturing characteristics for this type of inflator used in the U.S. market. . . . In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could pass through the air bag cushion material, which may result in injury or death to vehicle occupants.”

Repair Description:

Dealers will replace the driver airbag inflator on Saab 9-3 and 9-5 vehicles subject to this recall, free of charge. Dealers will replace the driver airbag module on Saturn Astra vehicles subject to this recall, free of charge.

Recall Status: INCOMPLETE. REMEDY NOT YET AVAILABLE

The announcement is part of a larger Takata recall that also involves Saab 9-3 and 9-5 luxury cars from the 2003 to 2011 model years, which we reported on Jan. 26. GM says the campaign involves about 180,000 U.S. cars in total. About 162,000 are Saab 9-3s and 9-5s — roughly 50,000 more than GM originally estimated last month — while the Saturn Astra accounts for the remainder.

GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson confirmed to Cars.com that today's announcement stems from Takata's Jan. 22 recall expansion, but he did not say when parts would be available for owners to service their cars.

"They'll get a letter fairly soon, [but] I don't have a date yet" on parts availability, Wilkinson said. "I think we've got an idea, but we're not ready to announce it yet."

It's also unclear where owners can get the fix. GM shuttered Saturn in late 2009 and sold Saab a few months later. In the past, owners from either brand could generally get repairs at existing GM dealerships — that is, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet or GMC — but the automaker is "still working out some of the details" for where it will service today's recall, Wilkinson said. "We will provide that info in the owner letters."
